Muertos Altar, Halloween, and Samhain

Dia de los Muertos (Nov. 1st.- Nov 2nd.) is a beautiful holiday of remembering and honoring your ancestors and those who have crossed over. My heritage is not Hispanic but as a child I spent many hours in Mexico with my parents who loved every aspect of the culture. By creating an altar with many of the traditional elements, it reflects this culture that they found so enchanting. There is a crossover as well with my own Pagan beliefs of Halloween/Samhain and the hour when the veil between the worlds is thin.

This is a wonderful time to reflect on the people you love and feel their spirits surround you again. Wishing All a Happy Halloween, Blessed Samhain and a joyous Dia de los Muertos.

Tarot Collage

I have returned to my love of collage and my life project of creating a tarot deck, starting with the Major Arcana. Collage gives a surreal atmosphere to every image, I think because perspective and size are not relevant to the design. The symbolism is more important. I can express what I want without being constricted or worried about rules. For me, color and pattern can evoke certain emotions and that is what I look for over all. I have a simple starting image and then I let fate decide what is needed to continue.

Altered Journals

I am now working on altered journals. Using scraps of leather and cloth, along with my usual odd bits to create grimoires suitable for documenting arcane spells and mystical musings. I am toying with the idea of presenting these at the Gaslight Gathering Steampunk and Victoriana convention coming up  October 7-9. The theme for the convention this year is "All the Steamy Things That Go Bump In The Night." This is an absolutely wonderful convention for seeing beautiful costumes and unusual devices and the theme this year is very dear to my heart.

Comic Con Recap

Comic Con was a wonderful, magickal and exhausting whirlwind. We reconnected with old friends, met some amazing and talented new people and generally immersed ourselves in the chaos that is the convention. Thank you to all the special people who bought my artwork...may it bring you joy!

Comicon Bound!

I will be exhibiting at the 2016 San Diego Comic Con Art Show. I have numerous small assemblage altars as well as some lovely Dolly Kei/Steampunk inspired pendants and brooches. I love the whimsy combined with folklore that the Dolly Kei aesthetic represents and I am finding elements of it creeping into my artwork more and more. There is also an influence of old New Orleans in each of these pieces. The ornate and crumbling wrought iron, the layers of paint and elegant decay. I want the art to emulate the atmosphere of a place that is very dear to my heart.
